The project of the National Environmental Museum for Biodiversity was launched this Saturday in Algiers, aiming to highlight and promote the country's natural heritage.
The launch ceremony for the museum project, which will be constructed in the Staoueli area, took place under the supervision of the Minister of Environment and Quality of Life, Kaouter Krikou. The event was attended by ministers and representatives of the environmental sector from several countries, on the sidelines of the International Forum on Biodiversity.
This museum will serve as a specialized space to introduce the nation's rich natural heritage and a reference point for environmental awareness on the importance of protecting natural resources, according to the explanations provided by the Minister on the occasion.
This museum will feature dedicated pavilions displaying various marine and terrestrial ecosystems, alongside models of flora and fauna found in Algeria, including rare and endangered species, to showcase the ecological richness of the country.
Earlier this morning, Ms. Krikou oversaw the opening of the International Forum on Biodiversity, held under the theme "Algeria... Ecological Diversity." Organized by the Ministry of Environment and Quality of Life under the auspices of the Prime Minister, Mr. Sifi Ghrieb, the event marks the celebration of the International Day for Biological Diversity, observed annually on May 22nd.
The events of this brief took place in the presence of the President of the Constitutional Court, Leila Aslaoui, along with several government members, ministers, and representatives of the environmental sector from a number of countries, including Mauritania, Chad, Portugal, and Italy. The event was also attended by representatives of the national community abroad, national institutions and bodies, and UN organizations.
The forum provided an opportunity to highlight the natural and ecological assets with which Algeria abounds. It also featured panel discussions among experts, researchers, and decision-makers on ways to enhance environmental governance, value natural resources, and preserve ecosystems.
During these sessions, the efforts made by Algeria in the field of protecting biodiversity were reviewed, presenting the most significant achievements and projects launched in this domain, alongside a presentation on the National Biodiversity Strategy looking toward 2030.
Launch of the National Biodiversity Platform
The contribution of members of the national community abroad was also highlighted in supporting scientific and environmental initiatives aimed at preserving the nation's natural resources.
In this context, the Minister announced during the forum's proceedings the launch of the "Forum of Algerian Competences in the Environmental Field." This initiative aims to bring together university professors, researchers, and Algerian experts to exchange knowledge and expertise, and to support the state's efforts in addressing contemporary environmental challenges.
This event was also highlighted by the launch of the National Biodiversity Platform, designed to serve as a digital space for collecting and updating data related to biodiversity at the national level. This includes continuously inventorying living species and mapping out their distribution and geographic locations, thereby helping to support monitoring mechanisms and data-driven decision-making.
In the context of promoting the nation's natural heritage, the issuance of a new postage stamp dedicated to the Addax was announced. The Addax is a species of desert antelope considered a symbol of Saharan biodiversity, and this initiative aims to enhance awareness of the vital importance of protecting endangered animal species.
Following the conclusion of the forum, Ms. Krikou received at the ministry's headquarters the Mauritanian Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, Messouda Baham Mohamed Laghdaf; the Secretary of State for the Environment of Portugal, João Manuel Esteves; and the representative of the Italian Minister of Environment and Energy Security, Rear Admiral Francesco Tomas.
On this occasion, the ministers and environmental sector representatives received detailed explanations regarding waste management in Algeria, as well as its valuation through various recycling projects.
