Algeria finished in third place at the African Open Para-powerlifting Championship, which concluded on Sunday at the "Miloud Hadefi" Olympic Complex in Oran, with a total of 78 medals: 20 gold, 35 silver, and 23 bronze.

First place went to Egypte, which collected 84 medals (47 gold, 28 silver, and 9 bronze). Nigeria ranked second with 49 medals: 32 gold, 12 silver, and 5 bronze.

During their final appearance on the platform, Algerian athletes added a new silver medal to their tally following the Open team event, contested on Sunday against Irak at the close of the competition.

"The results achieved by the Algerian athletes are very honorable, especially since we won medals against Paralympic champions," said assistant national coach Habib Belhaou.

Beyond the titles and medals at stake, this continental event in Oran allowed participating athletes to earn precious points in the world rankings, with the goal of qualifying for the World Championship scheduled for next December in Bahreïn. This event will also mark the start of qualifications for the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games.

This sporting event, dedicated to athletes with special needs, was organized over four days by World Para Powerlifting (WPPO), in collaboration with the Algerian Handisport Federation (FAH), under the auspices of the Ministry of Sports.

The competition saw the participation of 151 athletes (92 men and 59 women) representing 15 African countries, as well as several Asian nations including Iran, Irak, Bahreïn, and Kazakhstan, in addition to Grèce from Europe.
