Algeria celebrates World Africa Day this Monday as it continues its efforts to achieve continental integration and establish peace and security, while defending the continent's interests against the historical injustices it has suffered.

Algeria has always remained faithful to the principles enshrined in the African Union (AU) Charter and the values of the founding fathers, through the development of realistic approaches aimed at solving African crises with African solutions and maintaining the sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries.

In this context, Algeria has placed at the top of its priorities actions aimed at restoring peace and stability on the continent, especially in a context of multiplying transcontinental threats such as drug and arms trafficking, human trafficking, and illegal immigration. This vision has been manifested through the intense efforts deployed by Algeria within the AU Peace and Security Council, considering that its security and that of the African continent are closely linked.

Algeria’s strategy to strengthen its belonging to Africa has seen a new dynamic in recent years under the impetus of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who has insisted on many occasions on the need to prioritize political and development-linked solutions to make Africa a safe and developed continent. This approach has been materialized through the launch of numerous economic projects capable of blocking the phenomenon of terrorism and extremism and achieving the long-awaited economic takeoff in Africa.

Algeria's powerful and constantly renewed political commitment to achieving the continent's economic integration has been demonstrated through its participation in many regional projects, notably within the framework of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD).

To this end, Algeria dedicated its recent mandate at the UN Security Council to defending the continent's interests, while advocating for the removal of the historical injustice inflicted upon Africa.

The country has also hosted numerous political and economic events of continental dimension, including the 4th edition of the Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF 2025), the 12th edition of the High-Level Seminar on Peace and Security in Africa, Oran Process (2025), the international conference on the crimes of colonialism in Africa, the African ministerial conference on local pharmaceutical production and health technologies, as well as the African Startup Conference and the African Ministerial Telecommunications Summit.

Algeria, a key player in decision-making at the continental level

Furthermore, Algeria has actively and remarkably participated in various African summits and events, notably the 39th AU Summit held last February in Addis-Abeba. During this event, participants adopted a number of resolutions recognizing Algeria's pioneering role in defending African interests. They adopted, among others, the Algiers Declaration on the crimes of colonialism on the continent, while praising the efforts made by Algeria to achieve African integration.

Algeria’s increasingly active role within the continent, reflecting the wise policy and enlightened leadership of the President of the Republic, has been widely recognized, paving the way for Algeria to chair the African Peer Review Mechanism (MAEP/APRM). Algerian executives have also held important positions within the AU.

In the same vein, Algeria has hosted many African leaders, as well as high-level visits, such as those of the Chairperson of the AU Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat (formerly Mahmoud Ali Youssouf in the text), the UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), Claver Gatete, and Foreign Ministers from numerous African countries. These visits reflect the confidence of continental nations in the leadership of the President of the Republic and recognition of Algeria's role as a continental locomotive in the integration process.

In a statement to APS, Idriss Attia, a professor of political science and international relations, indicated that Algeria is an essential player in decision-making at the African level. It is also the architect of the security framework at the continental level, giving it the status of a reference in the matter facing foreign interference.

Bolstered by its revolutionary heritage, Algeria has become a "strategic compass" for the continent regarding cooperation, he argued. He pointed to the many high-level African delegations regularly visiting Algeria as proof.

"These visits represent a clear admission that the stability of the continent passes through Algerian diplomacy, which has resumed its role as a reliable strategic partner," he affirmed.

He added that Algeria has become the meeting point for countries wishing to coordinate their positions on major issues, such as the reform of the Security Council, security challenges in the Sahel region, and other African issues.

He further noted that Algeria has adopted a "diplomacy of achievement" through the launch of major transnational structural projects, such as the Trans-Saharan Road, the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline, and the fiber optic network. These projects aim to end dependence on foreign powers.

Mr. Attia assured that Algeria maintains the defense of African causes as a "structural constant," led by the issue of the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination.

Algeria, through its relations with major powers, also fulfills the role of a geopolitical leader capable of defending African interests and advocating for a multipolar world that respects the specificities of the African continent, he concluded.
