The Minister of the Environment and Quality of Life, Kaouter Krikou, accompanied on Sunday the Ministers of the Environment of Mauritania and Chad, Ms. Messouda Baham Mohamed Laghdaf and Mr. Hassan Bakhit Djamous respectively, during a visit to the "Fouka 2" seawater desalination plant in Tipaza.

On this occasion, the ministerial delegation was briefed on the Algerian experience in seawater desalination, combating climate change, and environmental preservation.

The officials at the "Fouka 2" plant presented a briefing on the Algerian experience in this field, particularly over recent years, following the decision of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to construct five (5) seawater desalination plants. Each facility is equipped with a capacity of 300,000 cubic meters per day, totaling an overall volume of 1.5 million cubic meters per day, as part of a national strategy aimed at addressing water stress.

According to the explanations provided on-site, Algeria aims to produce 5.6 million cubic meters of desalinated water per day by 2030. This is supported by a second complementary program decided last year by the President of the Republic, which involves the construction of six (6) additional plants, bringing the total number of seawater desalination facilities in the country to 25.

In a statement to the press, Ms. Krikou indicated that Algeria's two guests expressed their admiration for this strategic infrastructure, as well as their interest in the Algerian experience aimed at progressively eliminating the problem of water stress induced by climate change.

She stressed that the "Fouka 2" seawater desalination plant operates "according to modern, advanced, and environmentally friendly technologies."

She also noted that in the future, Algeria "will work on the valorization of brine, an experience that is also worthy of interest."

For her part, the Mauritanian Minister of the Environment and Sustainable Development praised the project, expressing her "pride as an African and as a representative of a Sahel country to see this strategic station operating with very advanced technologies."

For his part, the Chadian Minister of the Environment, Fisheries, and Sustainable Development estimated that the "Fouka 2" seawater desalination plant constitutes "an example" that African countries should follow to meet the drinking water needs of their populations, praising "the efforts of Algeria, led by the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who is accomplishing remarkable work for the benefit of Algerian citizens in this field."

He added that this achievement reflects "an Algerian experience worthy of interest that should serve as a source of inspiration for many African countries in this field."

It should be noted that this visit comes on the sidelines of the two ministers' participation in the international symposium, which kicked off its activities on Saturday in Algiers, on the occasion of International Day for Biological Diversity.
