The President of the Council of the Nation, Mr. Azouz Nasri, emphasized today, Tuesday, that Algeria, under the leadership of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, will remain faithfully committed to its firm and principled stance in supporting the African continent and defending its just causes.
Mr. Nasri stated, in a speech delivered during a virtual meeting of the Pan-African Parliament Bureau chaired by Mr. Fateh Boutbig —held a day after the celebration of Africa Day—that Algeria's stance stems "from a deep-seated belief that Africa's strength lies in the unity of its positions and the solidarity of its peoples."
The President of the Council of the Nation reaffirmed Algerians' pride in belonging to the African continent and their adherence to African unity, as well as their commitment to enhancing solidarity and integration among its countries in order to "build a future based on development, stability, justice, and prosperity."
He explained that the heavy responsibility entrusted to the members of the Pan-African Parliament "places them at the forefront of the battle to build a strong, united, and secure Africa, capable of making its voice heard and defending its interests, as well as the interests of Africans, in a world marked by growing transformations and challenges."
For his part, the President of the Pan-African Parliament, Mr. Fateh Boutbig, stated in his speech that celebrating Africa Day this year under the slogan "Ensuring sustainable water availability and safe sanitation systems to achieve Agenda 2063" reflects "our continent's deep awareness of the importance of water and sanitation as two fundamental pillars for comprehensive development, public health, food security, social stability, and human dignity."
He pointed out that "the water challenge has become one of the most prominent strategic challenges in Africa, given the increasing impacts of climate change—such as droughts, floods, and disruptions to the hydrological cycle. This necessitates doubling efforts, strengthening cooperation, and adopting innovative and sustainable solutions that place the African individual at the very heart of developmental priorities."
He highlighted "the pivotal role played by African nations in turning this challenge into an opportunity by investing in water infrastructure, developing non-conventional water resources, modernizing sanitation systems, and expanding the reuse of treated wastewater, thereby enhancing the continent's water security and sovereignty."
Mr. Boutbig reaffirmed the Pan-African Parliament's commitment to supporting legislative frameworks and continental policies that promote the sustainable management of natural resources, emphasizing that "achieving water security and sanitation requires an integrated vision built on political will, resource mobilization, innovation, and regional integration."
On this occasion, he praised "the outstanding efforts made by Algeria in recent years to enhance water security under the wise leadership of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, a vital sector that has witnessed unprecedented qualitative and strategic transformations." He pointed to "the completion of major seawater desalination projects, which have significantly raised the national capacity to secure drinking water, alongside expanding wastewater treatment plants, strengthening dam policies, and interconnecting water facilities to establish water solidarity across different regions of the country."
These efforts, he noted, reflected "a clear forward-looking vision that has made water security a top national priority and a fundamental pillar in the path toward sustainable development and confronting climate change."
