The United Kingdom announced on Monday a ban on social media access for minors under the age of 16, as well as the introduction of new restrictions targeting online gaming and live-streaming platforms.

In a statement, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer indicated that his government would undertake a profound reform of the regulations governing internet use to better protect children and adolescents.

"We are going to introduce radical changes to the rules applicable to social media to ensure better protection for minors when they browse online," stated the British head of government.

This decision is part of a progressive tightening of British policy toward tech giants. In recent years, London has increased pressure on digital companies to strengthen age-verification systems and adapt their algorithms to limit youth exposure to content deemed inappropriate or potentially dangerous.

The new measures also provide for stricter oversight of online video game platforms and live-streaming services—sectors particularly popular among teenagers that have sparked growing concerns regarding their impact on the mental health, safety, and well-being of minors.

With this move, the United Kingdom joins an international movement aimed at better regulating youth access to social media. Australia was the first country to adopt a ban on social media use for those under 16. Since then, several other states have initiated discussions or implemented similar regulations in response to rising concerns about the effects of these platforms on the health, safety, and development of children and adolescents.
