The substantive session of the Special Committee on Decolonization (Committee of 24) launched yesterday at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The committee is considered one of the most important UN mechanisms tasked with monitoring the implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples, and accompanying the decolonization process in territories that remain listed on the UN agenda.

During its substantive session, the committee will examine a number of issues related to Non-Self-Governing Territories. It will also address matters concerning the dissemination of information on decolonization, the dispatch of special visiting missions to the territories, and the implementation of the declaration on granting independence by specialized agencies and other international UN institutions.

During the proceedings of this session, the question of Western Sahara will receive the largest share of discussions, with an entire day dedicated to it and the possibility of continuing the debate on the following day if necessary. This reflects the importance that the United Nations and various stakeholders attach to the Western Sahara cause.

The discussion of this cause falls within the framework of following up on the implementation of General Assembly Resolution 80/89 regarding Western Sahara. The committee members are expected to hear statements from a large number of petitioners on the situation in the territory.

Algeria is participating in the work of this session as an observer member of the Committee of 24, where it is expected to deliver a speech reaffirming its firm and supportive stance on the Sahrawi people's inalienable right to self-determination, in accordance with international legitimacy and relevant United Nations resolutions.
