The Sahrawi National Council has warned of the critical deterioration in the health of Sahrawi civil detainee Naama Asfari, who continues his open-ended hunger strike to protest his arbitrary detention and the severe human rights violations he and other Sahrawi political prisoners of the Gdeim Izik group endure inside Moroccan occupation prisons.

In a statement reported by the Sahrawi News Agency (SPS), the Council explained that Asfari's ongoing hunger strike takes place under harsh detention conditions and systematic policies implemented by the Moroccan occupation. These practices include isolation, ill-treatment, and the denial of basic rights, in flagrant violation of international charters and international humanitarian law.

In this context, the Council confirmed that several detainees from the Gdeim Izik group have begun warning hunger strikes in solidarity with Naama Asfari. This step reflects the unity of Sahrawi political prisoners and their determination to continue their peaceful struggle to defend their dignity and rights, despite the pressure and punitive measures they face inside Moroccan occupation prisons.

Furthermore, the Sahrawi National Council held the Moroccan occupation fully responsible for any further deterioration in the health of Naama Asfari or any other striking prisoners. It demanded the immediate and unconditional release of all Sahrawi political prisoners, the implementation of relevant United Nations resolutions and opinions, and respect for obligations under international law.

The Council also stressed the need to provide urgent, independent medical care to Naama Asfari and to end policies of isolation and abuse. It called for allowing the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), UN special mechanisms, and international human rights organizations to visit Sahrawi political prisoners and monitor their conditions inside Moroccan occupation prisons.

Concluding its statement, the Sahrawi National Council appealed to the international community to intervene urgently to save the life of Naama Asfari and to exert the necessary pressure on the Moroccan occupation to release all Sahrawi political prisoners.
