The competitions of the National Karate-Do Championship (Seniors) continue this Friday for the second consecutive day at the "Harcha Hacène" Arena in Algiers. The event is taking place in a highly competitive atmosphere, following its launch yesterday with the participation of over 700 male and female athletes representing 31 leagues and 208 clubs from across the country.
Today’s program featured the continuation of the individual and team qualifiers in the "Kata" discipline for both men and women, as well as individual "Kumite" for both genders across the scheduled weight categories: -60 kg, -67 kg, -75 kg, -84 kg, and +84 kg for men, and -50 kg, -55 kg, -61 kg, -68 kg, and +68 kg for women.
So far, the competition has been characterized by a respectable technical level and thrilling bouts, reflecting the closely matched skills of the participants, according to the Director of Sports Organization at the Algerian Karate Federation, Mr. Abderrahmane Benyahia.
In a statement to the Algeria Press Service (APS), Mr. Benyahia explained that since its start, the competition "has witnessed an outstanding technical level and fierce rivalry among the athletes, reflecting the steady development of Karate-Do at the national level."
The championship has also seen remarkable performances from several clubs that have reached multiple finals, such as the clubs of Constantine, Hydra, Barika, and MC Alger. This serves as a strong indicator of the high-quality grassroots work these clubs are doing to train and nurture talents.
The competitions will continue this evening with the final bouts, while tomorrow, Saturday, is dedicated to team "Kumite" matches for both genders. The championship will then conclude with the remaining finals and the medal ceremony to crown the champions.
The Director of Sports Organization at the Algerian Karate-Do Federation emphasized that this championship is a crucial selection milestone to identify athletes who will join the national team. These athletes will prepare for upcoming international commitments and represent Algeria in major competitions, such as the Mediterranean Games, scheduled from August 21 to September 3 in Italy, and the African Championship, to be held from September 7 to 13 in Algeria.
