The President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, praised this Monday the Spanish authorities' responsiveness to Algeria's efforts to recover looted funds, emphasizing that "satisfactory results" have been achieved in this file, which is considered "one of the top priorities."
In a joint press statement with the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Spain, Mr. Pedro Sánchez, following their talks at the headquarters of the Presidency of the Republic, the President stated: "On this occasion, and during a frank dialogue, we addressed various aspects of cooperation in diverse fields such as energy, renewable energies, the promotion of trade exchanges, the encouragement of investment, and the revival of security cooperation, alongside judicial and consular cooperation."
In this regard, the President expressed his hope to "strengthen cooperation, particularly in cases related to combating corruption and recovering criminal assets, by accelerating mutual legal assistance requests," adding: "As we consider this file one of our priorities, we expect you, Mr. Prime Minister, to respond to our requests and continue the existing cooperation in handling judicial files."
The President took this opportunity to extend his thanks to the Spanish authorities for their "positive responsiveness to our endeavors to recover looted funds and achieving satisfactory results in this regard."
He noted that during his talks with Mr. Sánchez, they reviewed "ideas capable of ensuring coordination in combating irregular migration, human trafficking, and cross-border organized crime," alongside discussing "ways to facilitate the movement of people."
On another note, the President expressed his satisfaction with the existing partnership in the field of energy, which reflects "our commitment to our obligations toward the energy security of our partners in Europe," pointing out that "we look forward to broader and deeper cooperation in the field of renewable energies, given the immense potential Algeria possesses, making it a key player in the energy transition process within the Euro-Mediterranean space."
Furthermore, the President indicated that he, along with the Spanish Prime Minister, discussed cooperation in the scientific, technological, cultural, and humanitarian fields, stating: "We expressed a shared desire to revitalize currently existing cooperation mechanisms and reinforce them with others in these fields."
In a related context, the President expressed "deep satisfaction following productive talks, at a time when the long-standing relations uniting our countries are characterized by an increasing momentum. This momentum is highlighted today by this visit, which we consider a fundamental and important milestone in preparing for the 8th session of the Algerian-Spanish High-Level Meeting scheduled for next October."
The President explained that Mr. Sánchez's working and friendly visit to Algeria expresses the "political will to provide the necessary impetus to the Algerian-Spanish partnership, which yields definite benefits for both friendly countries," adding that "the new breath characterizing our relations today falls within an encouraging dynamic to expand and intensify sectoral cooperation, as well as serving as a catalyst for businessmen and economic operators."
After emphasizing that this visit is bound to open "new horizons for strengthening partnerships and capitalizing on mutually profitable investment opportunities," the President expressed his hope that "Spain, by virtue of its position within the European Union, will play a positive role in pushing for greater balance in economic relations between Algeria and the European Union, and contribute to reactivating the Algerian-European Partnership Council, which has not convened since 2020."
