Algeria will assume, starting August 1, 2026, the rotating presidency of the Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU), as part of its continental commitments and its ongoing efforts in favor of defending the principles and objectives of the AU, notably the promotion of peace and security in Africa, the peaceful resolution of conflicts, the strengthening of solidarity and common African action, in accordance with its foreign policy, under the enlightened leadership of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
In this perspective, Algeria has developed an action program for its presidency of the Council during the month of August, reflecting the priorities of the African continent in terms of peace and security, and responding to the various security, political, and humanitarian challenges it faces, through a series of meetings, institutional consultations, and field actions.
The Council will begin its work with a public session dedicated to education in the context of conflict, in order to reaffirm the importance of protecting the right to education as an essential pillar for building a lasting peace.
It will also hold two meetings dedicated to monitoring the evolution of the situation in the Sahel region and the Republic of South Sudan, within the framework of tracking hotbeds of tension and crises experienced by the continent, as well as supporting efforts aimed at consolidating stability and promoting peaceful solutions to conflicts.
Furthermore, three institutional consultations are planned between the PSC and several African bodies, notably the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights, and the African Governance Platform as well as the African Peace and Security Architecture (AGA-APSA), with a view to strengthening coordination and integration among the components of the African peace and security system.
The program also includes a meeting dedicated to the flagship initiative of the AU Agenda 2063, entitled "Silencing the Guns in Africa", aimed at evaluating the implementation level of the related roadmap, reviewing the progress achieved, as well as the persisting challenges.
A coordination meeting will also bring together the AU Centre for Counter-Terrorism (AUCTC), the AU Mechanism for Police Cooperation (AFRIPOL), the Committee of Intelligence and Security Services of Africa (CISSA), and the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), in order to strengthen the continental early warning system.
The Council will also review the continental threat assessment and risk mapping tool in Africa, proposed by Algeria during its presidency of the PSC in August 2025. It will furthermore organize the quarterly briefing of the A3 Group of African States members of the United Nations Security Council before the PSC, with a view to accelerating the implementation of the conclusions of the High-Level Seminar on Peace and Security in Africa – Oran Process – and unifying the African voice within the UN system.
As part of its program, Algeria also plans to organize a field mission of the Council to the Republic of Sudan, in order to learn about the evolution of the political situation and to strengthen the Council's involvement in efforts aimed at supporting peace and stability in this country.

Algeria emphasizes that its presidency of the AU PSC will constitute a new opportunity to strengthen the role and effectiveness of this body in the face of the multiple challenges confronting the continent, through the adoption of a proactive approach based on conflict prevention and the establishment of an integrated mechanism connecting early warning to rapid response, while supporting mediation processes and peaceful solutions.
Algeria also reaffirms its firm commitment to the principle of "African solutions to African problems" and to the strengthening of joint African action, in a manner that contributes to the consolidation of peace, security, and stability across the continent, in accordance with the aspirations of African peoples and the objectives of the AU Agenda 2063.
