The Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations in New York, Ambassador Amar Bendjama, participated on Thursday in a high-level meeting of the UN Security Council. The session, held under the rotating presidency of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, was themed: "Strengthening Mechanisms for the Peaceful Settlement of Disputes."
During his address at the meeting, Ambassador Bendjama reaffirmed Algeria's steadfast commitment, under the leadership of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to enhancing conflict prevention, consolidating the approach of peaceful settlements, and supporting regional and international peace and security. He emphasized that this commitment aligns perfectly with the provisions of international law and the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.
In light of growing international crises and the complexity of global security and political challenges, Ambassador Bendjama stressed the necessity for the international community to fully and consistently adhere to the rules of international law. He called for unwavering respect for the UN Charter's principles—chief among them the right of peoples to self-determination—while strictly avoiding any double standards or selective application.
Furthermore, Mr. Bendjama called for safeguarding the pivotal role of the United Nations, under the leadership of its Secretary-General, in conflict prevention and resolution. He urged the reinforcement of the UN's position as the central framework for addressing international and regional issues.
In this context, the Ambassador highlighted the importance of involving regional actors, primarily the African Union. He noted that this regional organization possesses profound knowledge of the African continent's specificities and an accurate understanding of conflict dynamics and their root causes. This expertise, he argued, uniquely qualifies the AU to actively contribute to formulating practical and sustainable solutions to regional and international conflicts.
In conclusion, Algeria's Permanent Representative called for the establishment of effective mechanisms to monitor and evaluate states' compliance with Security Council resolutions. This, he asserted, would ensure their full implementation and bolster the Council's capacity to fulfill its primary responsibility of maintaining international peace and security.
