Twenty-three people, including 19 firefighters, were injured in a massive fire that broke out on Sunday in the Queens borough of New York City, local authorities announced.
The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) stated that all the injured were transported to local hospitals. Meanwhile, local media reported that five firefighters sustained moderate to serious injuries, with one currently hospitalized in critical condition.
Kevin Woods, Chief of Operations for the FDNY, stated that upon arrival, responding crews found two buildings fully engulfed in flames, with the fire having already spread to a third structure.
Firefighters were forced to conduct emergency rescues and evacuate several residents from the building where the blaze originated. Crews continued their intensive operations to bring the fire under control and prevent it from spreading to adjacent properties.
