The city of Oran has secured the seventh position in The New York Times' annual ranking of the world's 52 best tourist destinations for 2026, thanks to its historical heritage, cultural vibrancy, and tourist appeal.
The American daily wrote in its ranking of the world's 52 best tourist destinations for 2026: "As Algeria asserts itself as a tourist destination, Oran, a coastal city overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, is experiencing a cultural renaissance that blends its rich past with vibrant new energy."
The newspaper highlighted the city's rich assets, describing it as "situated on plains and hills offering breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea, boasting palaces and fortresses, including the Oran Regional Theatre, an architectural masterpiece dating back a century, recently restored and now hosting a program of contemporary performances."
The American newspaper invites travelers to stroll "along the waterfront, where its balconies host cafes and art galleries, and where open-air musical concerts are held."
Oran, considered "the cradle of Raï music, an Algerian folk genre," is experiencing a renaissance as a hub for creativity and nightlife.
The New York Times also wrote that "during the summer, the city of Oran celebrates the week-long National Raï Song Festival, underscoring its status as the capital of rhythmic art in North Africa."
This ranking places Oran ahead of numerous European capitals, thereby embodying Algeria's image as both "historical and forward-looking." This success also reflects the country's tourism revival, marked by a significant increase in visitor numbers in recent years.
