The proceedings of the 51st Ordinary Session of the Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC) of the African Union began on Monday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in preparation for the 48th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council and the 39th African Union Summit, scheduled to take place from February 11 to 15.
The session’s agenda includes the review of strategic and institutional reports, particularly those related to the 2025 action plan regarding the issue of justice, as well as the 2026 roadmap regarding water supply and sanitation.
The session will also involve an evaluation of the activities of the sectoral and technical committees falling under the PRC.
In his opening remarks, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, highlighted the strategic importance of the upcoming summit, which will gather Heads of State and Government amidst the "delicate" context the continent is currently facing.
He emphasized the importance of the theme chosen for this year's summit, which concerns water supply, a "topical issue," he noted.
Furthermore, he welcomed the fact that Africa will host COP32 in 2027, scheduled for Addis Ababa. On another note, the Commission Chairperson assured that the AU "is pursuing, through its Peace and Security Council as well as its special envoys [...], its efforts to resolve crises and improve the framework for peace and security in Africa."
On the economic front, he underscored the tangible involvement of member countries, which he recalled contributed to the success of numerous major international and continental events in 2025.
