The Secretary of State to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, in charge of the National Community Abroad, Sofiane Chaib, took part on Wednesday and Thursday in Juba in a ministerial working visit by the AU High-Level Ad Hoc Committee for South Sudan (C5), indicated a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

This visit falls "within the framework of the African Union's (AU) support for the peace process in South Sudan and the monitoring of the implementation of the clauses of the Revitalized Peace Agreement concluded in 2018, particularly in light of important deadlines related to the completion of the transitional process in this country and the organization of the first elections since independence," the same source specified.

The visit also contributes to "the preparation of debates on the situation in South Sudan, scheduled for the 39th Ordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government of the AU, planned for February 2026 in Addis Ababa," the statement added.

A series of intensive meetings and high-level consultations were also on the agenda for this visit, primarily including an audience granted by the President of the Republic of South Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit, as well as extended talks with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and members of the Transitional Government of National Unity.

Furthermore, the committee members met with the African Union Mission in South Sudan (AUMISS), before holding a meeting with the African diplomatic corps accredited in Juba to brief them on the evolution of the current situation. They also held a joint consultation session with representatives of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), and the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC), in addition to talks with international partners and ambassadors accredited in Juba.

Moreover, the committee members met with representatives of the National Constitutional Review Commission, the National Elections Commission, the Political Parties Council, as well as representatives of civil society, the same source specified.

During his interventions, the Secretary of State reaffirmed "Algeria's unwavering support for the sovereignty and unity of South Sudan, as well as its constant solidarity with this country during this crucial historical period."

He also recalled "Algeria's central role at the UN and African levels in accompanying sustainable solutions in this country," stating that "the full implementation of the Revitalized Agreement remains the most appropriate path to achieve national reconciliation and overcome the delicate security and humanitarian situation currently facing South Sudan," according to the ministry's statement.
