The opening of the Main Round of the 2026 African Handball Championship this Sunday in Kigali will witness a fiery clash between the national teams of Algeria and Egypt.
The match will take place at 2:30 PM Algerian time.
The Greens' group in the Main Round consists of Egypt, Nigeria, and Angola.
The Egyptian team won against Gabon, Angola, and Uganda during the three matches of the group stage. Thus, the Egyptian team qualified for the Main Round, topping the group with 6 points.
In turn, the Angolan team joined Algeria's group in the Main Round after defeating Gabon (33–21).
The Greens overcame the Zambian team (37–21) this Saturday afternoon. This came in the third and final outing for the Greens in Group A of the 27th African Nations Championship continuing in Rwanda.
Amidst the brilliance of Meddahi, the Man of the Match (6 goals), the squad of veteran coach Salah Bouchekriou completely dominated the Zambians.
The Greens ended the first half with a full ten-goal lead (19–09).
The teammates of Ayoub Abdi had crushed the Rwandans last Thursday evening (46–25), 24 hours after their defeat against the Nigerians (23–25).
The Algerian seven qualified in second place (4 points) behind the leader Nigeria (6 points), which defeated Rwanda (30–20).
Should the Greens successfully navigate the Main Round, Berkous's teammates will contest the semi-finals next Thursday.
The final and the classification match will take place next Saturday evening.
Assisted by Aouachria, Sofiane Limam, and Abdelghani Loukil, Salah Bouchekriou is betting on restoring the glory of Algerian handball.
After securing the runner-up spot at the 2024 African Championship against Egypt, the biggest stake for the Greens remains securing a ticket to the 2027 World Championship in Germany.
The top five teams in the tournament will advance to the 30th World Championship on German soil next year.
