The Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU), held in Addis Ababa on February 14 and 15, adopted a resolution on Sunday classifying slavery, deportation, and colonialism as crimes against humanity and genocide against the peoples of Africa, and praised Algeria's efforts in this regard.

During the second and final day of its 39th Ordinary Session, the AU decided that its Member States would work together, in a spirit of solidarity and collectively, for the recognition of these crimes as such at the international level, while deciding to keep this issue under review.

The resolution welcomes the progress made by Member States and the AU Commission in the implementation of Decision 934, notably Algeria's organization of the International Conference on Colonial Crimes in Africa, which was held in Algiers on November 30 and December 1, 2025.

The draft resolution classifying slavery, deportation, and colonialism as crimes against humanity and genocide against the peoples of Africa was presented by the Republic of Togo.
