African Union Commission Condemns Terrorist Attacks Targeting Northwest Nigeria

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, "strongly" condemned the terrorist attacks carried out on Saturday in Zamfara State, northwest Nigeria, which resulted in the death of more than 50 civilians and the abduction of women and children.

In a statement issued yesterday, Sunday, the Commission Chairperson emphasized the African Union's "categorical rejection of all acts of terrorism and violent extremism against civilians, particularly women and children," describing them as "grave violations of human rights and serious threats to peace, security, and stability."

In this regard, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf expressed the African Union's "full solidarity with the government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria," offering his sincere condolences to the families of the victims and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.

He also called for the "immediate, safe, and unconditional release of all abducted women and children," and urged for "strengthening and coordinating collective efforts to protect civilians and prevent the recurrence of such atrocities, in line with the African Union's commitment to peace, security, and stability on the continent."
