An art exhibition by artist Wafaa Wali opened on Saturday evening in Algiers. Through her work, she dives into the worlds of Algerian and African women, as part of the celebrations for International Women's Day, observed annually on March 8th.

In her exhibition titled The African Woman, hosted in the Mahieddine Bachtarzi Algerian National Theatre, artist Wafaa Wali presents a rich collection of nearly 20 paintings. Utilizing various sizes and a blend of watercolors and oils, she merges elements of realism, impressionism, and abstraction. Her work highlights the elegance and beauty of Algerian women, showcasing the diversity of traditional costumes and jewelry. The collection also teems with vibrant African female portraits in full traditional attire, pulsating with life through flowing, luminous color palettes that reflect the nature and spirit of Africa.

The self-taught artist chose not to title her paintings, aiming to allow the audience to participate by choosing titles that reflect their own interpretations of her work. Her collection forms a mosaic characterized by a pure Algerian spirit with an African touch, drawing inspiration from elements of identity and national cultural heritage with its African dimensions. While the Algerian woman serves as the central theme, embodied through her values, customs, and heritage, a significant portion of the work is dedicated to highlighting the beauty of the African woman, her traditional attire, jewelry, and daily life.

The artist also dedicates a section to celebrating Algerian traditional heritage and architecture, such as the Casbah of Algiers. Her paintings are furnished with the atmosphere of traditional festivities and various classic garments, including the Haik, Karakou, and Kabyle Djebba. These works are vibrant with bright colors, capturing the essence of Algerian joy and identity.

In a statement to the Algerian Press Service (APS) following the exhibition's opening, artist Wafaa Wali noted that: "The paintings presented to the public center on the theme of Algerian and African women in celebration of International Women's Day. It is an opportunity to highlight the status of women in society and their fundamental role in preserving the various elements of both tangible and intangible Algerian and African cultural heritage". She added that her works "document traditional Algerian attire, such as the Haik, Burnous, and the authentic Algerian Kaftan, to protect national memory while also reflecting the richness of African sartorial heritage".

It is noteworthy that the self-taught artist Wafaa Wali, a native of Bejaia, has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions since the year 2000. She has enriched and refined her artistic experience by engaging in various art workshops.

This art exhibition continues until March 12th.
