Highly anticipated by economic circles, the meeting of the Algerian-Nigerien joint commission, currently taking place in Niamey, comes in a context marked by a strong desire to strengthen regional integration and boost South-South trade, economic and financial expert Idir Saci indicated on Monday. He recalled that experts and officials from both countries are working on several key structural projects, against the backdrop of an ambition to build a sustainable and mutually beneficial partnership.
Speaking on the "L'invité du jour" (Guest of the Day) program on Channel 3 of the Algerian Radio, the expert affirmed that "this joint commission has existed for a very long time, since the early 1970s," which reflects a tradition of dialogue and cooperation between Algiers and Niamey. According to him, this continuity constitutes "a major asset" for advancing structural projects.
"The Energy Sector Occupies a Central Place"
Among the priorities discussed, the energy sector occupies a central place. Algeria, already present in northern Niger in oil exploration, intends to strengthen its cooperation in this strategic field. "The energy file is the major file," Mr. Saci affirmed, highlighting "the prospects offered by the Trans-Saharan gas pipeline connecting Nigeria to Europe via Algeria."
According to him, this large-scale project could generate significant economic benefits for the entire region. "It is an opportunity for both States," he explained, stressing that it would contribute "to consolidating Algeria's role as an energy hub while offering Niger an opening to international markets."
Strengthening Trade Through Infrastructure Development
Beyond energy, the discussions also focus on infrastructure development, notably the Trans-Saharan Highway and railway projects. These projects aim, according to him, "to open up Niger and strengthen trade."
"Niger is a landlocked country, so we are offering it a Mediterranean facade," the expert indicated, insisting on the importance of logistical corridors.
Cooperation is not limited to infrastructure. Algeria is also banking on the transfer of know-how, particularly in the fields of training and engineering. "It is a win-win approach," Mr. Saci estimated, noting that this strategy allows Nigerien partners "to develop their capacities and ensure the sustainability of their projects."
Focus on the Pharmaceutical Industry
The pharmaceutical sector is also among the rapidly expanding axes of cooperation. Algeria, which has developed a high-performing local industry, aims to increase its exports to Sahel countries. "Algeria has succeeded in this sector," he affirmed, mentioning a promising market and natural complementarities between the two countries.
Towards a Broader Economic Integration of the Continent
Finally, the establishment of a trade corridor between Algeria and Niger constitutes an additional lever to boost trade. This mechanism should facilitate the import and export of goods while opening new prospects toward West Africa. "It is a first platform," Mr. Saci specified, seeing it as a step toward a broader economic integration of the continent.
Moreover, the expert analyzed, this joint commission confirms the desire of both countries to build a strategic partnership based on pragmatism, complementarity, and a long-term vision.
