The Stellantis Group announced yesterday, Tuesday, in a press release, the launch of the expansion of the Fiat factory in Tafraoui, in the wilaya of Oran, with the aim of increasing production volume to 135,000 vehicles per year by 2028.
This new stage "will place the Tafraoui site among the most important Stellantis manufacturing centers in Africa and the Middle East," according to the statement.
The project includes the expansion of welding and assembly lines, as well as the construction of a new painting unit, to support the factory's ramp-up and meet the demands of the Algerian market, the same source specified.
"This project is part of Stellantis' industrial strategy in Algeria and confirms the group's desire to make the country a major regional hub," the group emphasized.
This new strategic investment will generate more than 1,000 new direct and indirect jobs, promote the development of local integration through increased volumes, and offer new prospects for Algerian suppliers and industrial partners, according to the same source.
Quoted in the statement, Stellantis Group's Chief Operating Officer for the Middle East and Africa region, Samir Cherfan, stated that "the constant evolution of the Tafraoui plant reflects the group's ambition to build a modern and competitive automotive industry in Algeria."
He added that "in just two years, the project has reached significant milestones, from the launch of assembly to the commissioning of the painting and welding workshops."
"This extension allows us to move towards our goal of making Algeria a strong industrial base and accelerating the growth of the local automotive ecosystem," he maintained.
As a reminder, since its opening in December 2023, the Fiat site in Tafraoui has seen remarkable growth in record time: production volume increased from 17,000 vehicles in 2024 to 53,000 in 2025, according to the statement.
The new welding and painting lines have been active since September 2025, supporting the imminent first CKD (Completely Knocked Down) launch of the Grande Panda in Algeria.
The conclusion of an agreement for several stamping parts with an Algerian company completed the value chain and strengthened the industrial ecosystem, according to the statement, which noted that the objective is to produce 90,000 vehicles in 2026, and eventually reach 135,000 vehicles per year by 2028 through the plant's expansion.
