The senior national swimming team took second place in the overall standings of the 17th edition of the Open African Championship on Saturday evening, following the fifth and final day of competition held at the Aquatic Center of the Miloud Hadefi Olympic Complex in Oran.
Algeria wrapped up this continental edition with a total of 27 medals (10 gold, 8 silver, and 9 bronze). The title went to Egypt, which totaled 23 medals (11 gold, 6 silver, and 6 bronze), while South Africa completed the podium with 32 medals (9 gold, 13 silver, and 10 bronze).
The Algerian team added to its tally on the final day by securing four new medals (2 gold and 2 silver).
Swimmer Jaouad Syoud distinguished himself by winning gold in the 200m individual medley with a time of 2:01.18, as well as in the men's 4x100m medley relay.
He was also crowned champion in other events during the previous days, confirming his status as a major figure in the competition.
The two silver medals were won by Oussama Sahnoune in the 200m individual medley, as well as by the women's 4x100m medley relay team.
Delivering a remarkable performance, Jaouad Syoud dominated the entire competition by claiming five gold medals and winning the trophy for the best swimmer of this 17th edition.
In the junior category, South Africa took first place in the standings, ahead of Egypt and third-place Algeria.
The performances achieved in Oran are being closely watched in anticipation of the World Championships in Beijing, scheduled for December 2026.
With this collective performance and the emergence of a new competitive generation, Algerian swimming confirms its progression on the continental stage, driven by a balance between experience and young talent.
Organized by Africa Aquatics, in collaboration with the Algerian Aquatics Federation and under the aegis of the Ministry of Sports, this edition of the African Championship brings together four categories for the first time: seniors, juniors, masters, and inter-zonal.
The event brings together approximately 450 male and female swimmers representing around forty African countries.
The competitions will continue until Sunday with the masters events, which feature the participation of more than 50 athletes aged 25 and over.
