Algerian Aymen Djaber won a silver medal in the Scratch race at the 2026 African Track Para-Cycling Championships, currently underway in Nigeria, following his second-place finish in the event's final, held on Monday at the Abuja Velodrome.

This is the second silver medal for Algeria in these African Para-Cycling Championships, following the one won the day before by Zine-Eddine Merabet in the Individual Pursuit event.

The Algerian international had brilliantly qualified for the final of this event before losing to Egypt's Islam Abou Zaid, thus settling for second place.

For his part, Aymen Djaber had failed to reach the final of the Individual Pursuit, settling for a match against South African Trut Reyaan in the bronze-medal match, where he was ultimately defeated.

But it was only a minor setback, as he redeemed himself this Monday by securing silver in the Scratch race, thus offering Algeria its second medal of the competition.

The national track cycling team (men and women) has been hard at work in Nigeria since Friday in preparation for these 2026 African Championships, which are taking place from May 10 to 17 in Abuja.

In addition to Aymen Djaber and Zine-Eddine Merabet, Algeria has entered thirteen other able-bodied cyclists (10 men and 3 women), under the direction of coach Abdelbasset Hannachi.

In the Elite Men's category, the National Technical Directorate selected Oussama Mimouni, Hamza Yacine, Nadjib Assel, Anes Riahi, and Yacine Chalel, while Saâd Bouchelaghem, Abdallah Allal, Selmane Mansouri, Abdelkader Bouchelaghem, and Ahmed Ilyès Gaguèche were entered in the youth categories.

As for the women, the national colors will be represented by Yassamine El Meddah, Malak Mechab, and Sihem Bousebaâ, with the ambition of collecting a maximum number of medals of various colors.
