The European Commission announced on Monday the dispatch of four water bomber planes to help combat the fires in southern France, as part of the European forest firefighting framework.

These aircraft "will arrive this very day from Cyprus and Sweden to reinforce French firefighters around Perpignan," the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated on social media.

These water bombers were activated under the EU Civil Protection Mechanism and are part of the RescEU resource-sharing program, which allows for the pooling of firefighting resources at the continental level.

In addition to France, Portugal has appealed for European assistance in recent days to fight forest fires.

In this context, 118 firefighters and 45 vehicles from Spain have been deployed to Portugal, along with three firefighting planes based in Italy and Spain.
