The Algerian women's national volleyball team made a perfect start to the Zone 1 qualifications for the 2026 African Nations Championship, defeating their Tunisian counterpart by 3 sets to 2 (23-25, 24-26, 25-16, 25-23, 15-9) on Sunday evening at the "Hamou Boutlélis" Sports Palace in Oran.

Trailing two sets to zero after dropping the first two frames, the Algerian players showed tremendous character to turn the match around. Becoming more focused and effective as the game progressed, they won the third and fourth sets in succession before clinching the tie-break (15-9) to complete a remarkable comeback.

With this victory, the Greens take a solid step toward qualification ahead of the return leg, scheduled for Monday at 6:00 PM at the same venue.

They will need to consolidate their advantage against a Tunisian side that will be looking to reverse the situation.

Organized over two days by Zone 1 of the African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB) in coordination with the Algerian Volleyball Federation (AVF), this qualifying tournament ultimately features a double-header between Algeria and Tunisia, after originally being scheduled to bring together three North African teams.

The winner of the two legs will secure a ticket to the final phase of the 2026 Women's African Nations Championship, which will take place from August 23 to September 5 in Nairobi, Kenya.

This edition of the African Championship holds particular significance as it serves as a crucial step in the qualification process for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games in the United States.
