Algeria was crowned African archery champion at the conclusion of the 15th edition of the African Championship, which closed on Sunday at the Mediterranean Village in Oran. The national team finished at the top of the general standings with an exceptional harvest of 25 medals, consisting of 12 gold, 8 silver, and 5 bronze.
Driven by the remarkable performances of its archers in various individual and team events, the national selection dominated the continental competition ahead of Namibia, which finished second with 9 medals (6 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze), and Egypt, third with 4 medals (3 gold and 1 silver), after five days of competition.
The Algerian gold medals were won by several archers in individual events. These notably included Rahmoun Maroua in barebow, and Bakir Emadeddine in senior recurve, as well as Drid Maria and Bouzouar Ilyes in under-21 recurve.
The eight other gold medals were secured in the team events—women's, men's, and mixed—across the three archery disciplines.
The President of the Algerian Sport Shooting Federation (FATS), Abderrazak Lazreg, praised these results, stating that this tally "bears witness to the level reached by Algerian archers" in a highly competitive continental event.
"In just five days of competition, our archers managed to secure a total of 25 medals, including 12 gold, 8 silver, and 5 bronze, a result that confirms the progression of the discipline in Algeria," he highlighted.
For his part, the President of the African Archery Confederation (World Archery Africa), Ahmed Tarik Amiry of Sudan, expressed his satisfaction with the running of this edition hosted in Algeria, praising the quality of the organization as well as the performances delivered by the African athletes.
The African Archery Championships hold particular importance as they are registered in the world rankings of the International Archery Federation (World Archery). They allow participants to gather points toward qualification for the upcoming 2028 Olympic Games.
This competition also serves as an important qualifying step for young athletes under 18 aiming to secure a spot at the African Youth Games scheduled to take place in Dakar in 2026.
Organized by the Algerian Sport Shooting Federation under the aegis of the African Archery Confederation, this continental event brought together 127 athletes, including 82 men and 45 women, representing 17 African nations.
The winners received their medals during the closing ceremony, which was attended by the President of the International Archery Federation (World Archery), Greg Easton, the President of the African Archery Confederation, and members of the Algerian Sport Shooting Federation.
