The Algerian women's national football team made a successful entry into the 14th edition of the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2026), defeating their Senegalese counterparts 2-0 (halftime: 1-0) on Sunday in their opening Group A match.
The two goals of the match were scored by Marine Dafeur (42nd minute, penalty) and Melissa Bethi (88th minute).
The national women's team is competing in this AFCON 2026 with the ambition of reaching new heights, after making history by reaching the quarterfinals for the first time in the previous edition.
This edition brings together 16 nations for the first time in the competition's history, divided into four groups of four. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the quarterfinals. The four semifinalists will secure their tickets to the 2027 World Cup, with the final phase set to take place in Brazil.
However, the competition will not end there for the teams eliminated in the quarterfinals. They will participate in a series of matches to determine the two African representatives qualified for the intercontinental World Cup playoffs.
