The MP from the National Liberation Front (FLN) party, Mrs. Khalida Boufedech, was elected on Tuesday as the new President of the People's National Assembly (APN) for the next five years, under the 10th legislature.

Mrs. Boufedech garnered 302 votes against 57 for the candidate Amine Allouche of the Movement of Society for Peace (MSP) and 7 for the candidate Rachid Hassani of the Rally for Culture and Democracy (RCD), out of the 366 votes cast.

The election was held in accordance with the APN’s rules of procedure, which dictate that the President of the Assembly is elected by secret ballot when there are multiple candidates. The candidate who obtains an absolute majority of the votes is declared elected.

The new President of the lower house of Parliament was born on May 27, 1982. She graduated in general medicine from the University of Algiers in 2008, before obtaining a specialized studies diploma in allergology and clinical immunology in 2019.

Mrs. Boufedech began her professional career at the Ain Taya Public Hospital (wilaya of Algiers), before joining the Beni Messous University Hospital Center (CHU).

In 2023, she was appointed head of department at the Health Directorate of the wilaya of Algiers.

On the political front, she was elected as a member of the Municipal People's Assembly (APC) of Bordj El Bahri for the 2012–2017 term, and then as a member of the People's Assembly of the wilaya of Algiers (APW) in 2021.
