A coordination meeting was held this Thursday at the headquarters of the Ministry of Environment and Quality of Life to activate the mechanisms of the national plan for the rehabilitation of environmental habitats affected by recent forest fires.
The meeting was held under the supervision of the Minister of Environment and Quality of Life, Kaoutar Krikou, in the presence of representatives from relevant sectors and bodies—notably the agriculture sector, the National Gendarmerie, the National Police, and the Algerian Space Agency—along with environment directors of the affected provinces, as well as experts and specialists in the field.
During the meeting, the current ecological status of the fire-affected areas was reviewed—specifically concerning migratory birds, other animal species, vegetation cover, and soil—and various technical and scientific aspects regarding the assessment of environmental damage were discussed.
Participants also discussed the participatory working methodology to be adopted for executing the national plan to rehabilitate damaged ecosystems, restore their ecological functions, and enhance their resilience against the impacts of climate change, particularly forest fires.
On this occasion, Mrs. Krikou emphasized the importance of coordinating efforts among various relevant sectors and bodies in implementing the requirements of the National Climate Adaptation Plan approved by the Council of Ministers on March 8, 2026.

She also stressed the necessity of adopting a "scientific and participatory" approach based on accurate diagnosis of environmental damage to ensure the execution of an integrated national program for rehabilitating affected areas, according to a sustainable vision that preserves forest resources and biodiversity while strengthening the protection of national ecosystems.
In addition to natural regeneration, the national plan will work on rehabilitating fire-damaged environmental areas through a series of operations including planting fire-resistant species and implementing mechanisms to protect ecosystems, according to the Minister, who highlighted the need to involve micro-enterprises, civil society, and local populations in executing the plan.
After highlighting the role of climate change in the outbreak of recent fires, Krikou revealed that she will participate today, Thursday, in a high-level meeting of environment, climate, and water ministers from African Union nations, aiming to study the repercussions of the "El Niño" phenomenon and establish a unified African stance to present at the upcoming Climate Summit scheduled for next November in Türkiye.
