The United Nations' World Meteorological Organization (WMO) warned on Friday of the continued intensification of the "El Niño" phenomenon. The organization expects this weather pattern to dominate global climate conditions from August through October, significantly increasing the likelihood of above-average temperatures in many parts of the world and causing drastic shifts in rainfall patterns.
In its latest monthly Global Seasonal Climate Update, the WMO indicated that, alongside the exceptional rise in global sea surface temperatures, El Niño is projected to severely impact weather patterns across multiple regions in the coming months.
In a related context, UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated that "El Niño is no longer merely a passing phenomenon, but a living reality that is driving up our planet's temperatures." He warned that what the world is currently experiencing is merely the first chapter of the phenomenon's devastating repercussions.
Guterres highlighted the growing strength of this climate pattern, noting that it "further ignites our already burning planet with scorching heat domes, catastrophic wildfires, and record-high ocean temperatures." He firmly stressed, "If we do not act to protect people and address the root causes of the crisis, the risks will become far more deadly."
It is worth noting that the El Niño phenomenon poses an escalating environmental and climatic threat, driving an unprecedented surge in atmospheric temperatures and warming global bodies of water to extreme levels.
