Nigeria has been officially designated by World Boxing to host the African Olympic boxing qualifying tournament for the Los Angeles 2028 Games, the global governing body announced on its official website.
The qualification system for the boxing events of the Los Angeles 2028 Games (LA28), managed by World Boxing, will run from April 1, 2027, to May 31, 2028.
It offers 248 quotas distributed with strict gender parity (124 men and 124 women) across 14 weight categories in total (7 for women and 7 for men).
The Olympic qualification process is structured around world and continental competitions, offering up to four qualification opportunities per athlete: the World Boxing Championships in Astana (Kazakhstan) as the first major qualifying tournament, continental qualification tournaments (for Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe, and Oceania), and World Qualifiers to allocate the remaining spots.
For the African continent, a total of 14 direct places are allocated via the African continental tournament (7 for women and 7 for men), granted only to the winner of each category.
To this end, African boxers will have four chances to qualify: the World Boxing Championships (2027) in Astana; the Continental Tournament in Nigeria (late 2027 / early 2028), reserved for the winner of each weight category; the first World Qualifying Tournament in Italy (2028); and the second World Qualifying Tournament in Hungary (2028), the final opportunity to secure a quota.
