The Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts, Ms. Houria Meddahi, outlined on Saturday in Algiers the main lines of the national strategy to promote the tourism sector within the framework of the 2026-2028 action plan, which relies essentially on "supporting domestic tourism, improving inbound tourism, and providing a quality and authentic tourism offer."
Speaking at the annual evaluation meeting with the Wilaya Directors of Tourism and Handicrafts, Ms. Meddahi stressed that this strategy "will contribute to the development of the local economy, in line with Algeria's aspirations for a tourism offer recognized for its quality and authenticity, and to the development of tourism capable of opening up broad investment and employment opportunities, particularly for young people, while allowing Algerian families to spend their holidays within the country."
The Minister explained that this strategy is based on several pillars, notably "supporting domestic tourism, promoting inbound tourism, encouraging investment, making tourism land available to increase accommodation capacity, generalizing digitization and modernizing the sector, as well as improving services by raising the level of training."
Furthermore, it aims to "welcome 8 million tourists by 2029," within the framework of an approach based on "developing national tourism, particularly domestic and inbound, accompanied by practical and concrete measures, including the development of coastal tourism, seaside tourism and thalassotherapy, mountain tourism, as well as the completion of the modernization and rehabilitation program for the public hotel stock."
The strategy also tends to "develop Saharan tourism, business tourism, cultural and religious tourism, given the tourism assets Algeria possesses" in these areas, in order to "confer a mark of excellence" on the offers, particularly Saharan tourism, as part of "efforts for sustainable positioning on world tourism and pricing markets."
Reviewing the Tourism and Handicrafts sector for the year 2025, the Minister indicated that national tourism experienced, during the past year, a "remarkable dynamic, reflecting the efforts made in promoting tourism investment and expanding the hotel stock as an essential pillar of the diversification of the national economy." In this regard, she reported "the delivery of 129 tourism projects, with 196 new projects scheduled for delivery during the year 2026."
In the field of tourism promotion, Ms. Meddahi noted that participation in national and international events, and the simplification of tourist visa issuance procedures, contributed to "bringing the number of tourists entering Algeria to more than 3.5 million, in addition to the approval of 90 new tourism projects."
