The Algerian flag has lit up the US city of Kansas City, which is set to host Algeria’s national football team at the upcoming World Cup.

The tribute to Algeria’s colours began on Tuesday night and will continue for an extended period.

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas had already welcomed the Algerian national team months before Les Verts’ participation in the 2026 World Cup, in a message that drew wide engagement on social media.

Lucas voiced his enthusiasm at the prospect of hosting the Desert Warriors in about four months’ time, writing: “1, 2, 3, vive l’Algérie! The Algerian national team will train at Rock Chalk Park stadium.”

Les Verts are expected to face the Netherlands and Italy in friendly matches in Kansas City at the beginning of June.

The mayor concluded his message by saying: “From our friend Klassis, a proud Algerian, and the people of Kansas City: welcome home!”
