The Algeria-Zimbabwe Parliamentary Friendship Group, chaired by Ben Slimane Khelifa, held a meeting via videoconference this Wednesday with its counterpart at the National Assembly of the Republic of Zimbabwe, chaired by Webster Kotiwani Shamu, according to a statement by the National People's Assembly (APN).
On this occasion, Ben Slimane Khelifa recalled the "excellent and historical relations" between the two countries, which were forged in the midst of the common struggle against colonialism and consolidated over decades of solidarity and political understanding. He noted that both nations share a strategic and unified vision based on respect for the sovereignty of states and the right of peoples to self-determination, the same source explained.
At the parliamentary level, the group chairman highlighted the importance of strengthening parliamentary relations by intensifying coordination and consultation between lawmakers of the two countries. He emphasized working to unify positions within regional and international parliamentary organizations to serve common interests and enhance bilateral cooperation.
Regarding the economic aspect, Ben Slimane pointed out that the volume of trade exchange between the two countries "does not reflect the depth of their political relations," considering this "gap as a real opportunity that should be invested in."
He also recalled the steadfast principles underpinning Algerian foreign policy, chiefly good neighborliness and support for the right of peoples to self-determination.
For his part, Webster Shamu appreciated the convening of this meeting, which aims to discuss areas of joint cooperation, particularly the preparation of memorandums of understanding between the two groups and the strengthening of economic ties. He praised "Algeria's welcoming of Zimbabwean students in Algerian universities within the framework of scholarships" and noted the support his country received during its participation in the Intra-African Trade Fair event in 2025.
Additionally, members of the Zimbabwean group lauded the level of relations between the two countries, recalling Algeria's support and backing for their country during the phase of common struggle. They stressed the importance of developing cooperation in the fields of business, trade, industry, and infrastructure, as well as enhancing coordination in continental economic forums, according to the APN statement.
