The Council of the National Independent Authority for Elections (ANIE) has approved clarifications regarding cases raised by individuals wishing to run for the National People's Assembly (APN) elections scheduled for July 2, according to an ANIE statement released Saturday.
"After reviewing various cases related to elected officials (political affiliation and the exercise of electoral mandates), which represent a summary of the cases submitted, the ANIE Council unanimously validated the clarification of cases submitted by prospective candidates for the election of APN members, scheduled for July 2, 2026," the statement noted.
"Any candidate running under the banner of a political party may stand for election under the same formation. Similarly, any candidate running under the banner of a political party may run under the banner of another party or as an independent list if their current mandate has expired," the communiqué added.
The document further specifies that "any independent candidate currently exercising a mandate may stand for the legislative elections of July 2 under the banner of another political party or an independent list, provided their current mandate has expired."
In the same context, "any candidate currently exercising an elective mandate under the banner of a political party in a non-compliant situation may stand for election as part of an independent list."
"It is prohibited for any elected official currently serving under the banner of a political party to run under the aegis of another party or an independent list if they have not resigned from their current party," the statement clarified.
Furthermore, "it is prohibited for any candidate applying under the aegis of a political party whose status is non-compliant, and who is currently exercising a mandate, to run under the aegis of that same party until its status is regularized; they are also prohibited from applying under the aegis of another political party."
The Independent Authority stated that through its clarification communiqués, it "does not intend in any way to restrict the right to candidacy guaranteed by the Constitution, but rather aims to clarify the modalities for exercising this right within the framework of constitutional principles and the foundations of the electoral system." This includes the "moralization of political life, respect for the ethics of electoral practices, and eligibility conditions based essentially on two fundamental criteria: political affiliation and the exercise of a representative electoral mandate."
ANIE emphasized that it "remains in constant contact with its partners among political parties and independent lists to address any concerns or requests for clarification in this regard," the source concluded.
