At least 69 people, mostly civilians, were killed in an attack carried out by an armed militia in the Ituri province, located in the northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, according to local authorities.

Authorities reported that the attacks targeted isolated villages in Ituri, noting that the majority of the victims were civilians.

Last April, local officials announced that more than 30 people were killed in attacks carried out by militants affiliated with the ISIS terrorist organization in the eastern part of the country.

Meanwhile, security sources stated that the deteriorating conditions in the region delayed efforts to recover the victims' bodies for several days, amid an escalation of violence in the area.
