Algerian athlete Souad Azzi secured a new continental medal for Algeria after winning the bronze medal in the 20km race walk event on Saturday, during the fifth day of the 2026 African Athletics Championships, currently underway in Accra, Ghana.

Souad Azzi finished the race in third place with a time of 1 hour, 34 minutes, and 28 seconds, behind Ethiopian Shegite Fonkamo Yebalam, who won the African title with a time of 1:33:31, while the silver medal went to Kenya's Sylvia Kemboi with a time of 1:33:44.

This new medal allows Algeria to bolster its continental tally, just days after the gold medal won by Algerian champion Zahra Tatar in the hammer throw event.

Zahra Tatar, the African champion, had given Algeria its first gold medal in the 2026 edition of the African Championships, held from May 12 to 17 at the University of Ghana Stadium in Legon, Accra.

Algeria is represented in this continental competition by 10 participants across several disciplines, notably throwing events, middle-distance races, and race walking.

The African Senior Athletics Championships represent the most important continental competition in the sport of athletics, bringing together the elite of African athletes across various specialties such as sprints, long-distance races, relays, and other events.
