The League of Ulema, Preachers, and Imams of the Sahel Countries condemned, in a statement, the terrorist attack that targeted last Thursday the Diori Hamani International Airport in the Nigerien capital, Niamey, which resulted in a number of casualties among security forces and civilians.
The League explained that "attacking peaceful people is an act of aggression and great injustice that Almighty God has forbidden (...) and attacking innocents cannot be justified under any cover, as it is completely detached from the rulings of Sharia and the values of religion."
In this context, it expressed its "strong condemnation of this terrorist act," emphasizing that "violence can never be an approach for reform and nation-building."
The League called upon "the violent groups that have chosen terrorism as a method in the region to review their approach and reconcile with Almighty God and with their peoples."
It also urged the nation's elites in the Sahel region to "bear their historical responsibilities, stand with the truth, and align themselves with their homelands."
