The Algerian middle-distance runner, Djamel Sedjati, achieved third place in the 1000-meter race within the Monaco Meeting, which took place this Friday evening at Louis II Stadium, on behalf of the 2026 Diamond League for athletics, after recording a time of 2:13.94 minutes.

The race was won by Kenyan runner Emmanuel Wanyonyi with a time of 2:11.83 minutes, a time that is considered a new world record in the 1000-meter race, while Briton Jake Wightman placed second with a time of 2:12.77 minutes.

Sedjati improved his personal best in this distance by three-hundredths of a second, after he had recorded 2:13.97 minutes on March 5, 2024, thereby rising to third place on the list of the fastest Algerian runners in the 1000-meter race.

The former Olympic champion, Taoufik Makhloufi, still remains the best Algerian runner in this distance, after recording a time of 2:13.08 minutes on the first of July 2015 in the French city of Nancy, ahead of the legend Noureddine Morceli, who achieved a time of 2:13.73 minutes on the second of July 1993.

In turn, the former Algerian champion in middle-distance races, particularly the 800-meter discipline, Djabir Saïd-Guerni, holds a personal best time of 2:14.52 minutes in the 1000-meter race, which he recorded on the fifth of September 1999.

For his part, the 21-year-old Kenyan runner, Emmanuel Wanyonyi, succeeded in breaking the previous world record, which was held by his compatriot Noah Ngeny with a time of 2:11.96 minutes, recorded during the Italian Rieti meeting in September 1999.
