The Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, Mr. Ahmed Attaf, took part on Tuesday via videoconference in the ministerial meeting of the Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU), the ministry said in a statement.
The meeting was dedicated to reviewing "the fight against terrorism and violent extremism in Africa" and debating "ways to strengthen continental efforts in this area, both institutionally and operationally, notably within the framework of the Strategic Plan of Action to Combat Terrorism (2026–2030), which is among the proposals presented by the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in his capacity as the African Union Champion for the Prevention and Combating of Terrorism and Violent Extremism in Africa," the same source specified.
In an address delivered on this occasion, Mr. Attaf emphasized the "need to leverage African frameworks and mechanisms to develop a comprehensive and integrated vision for combating terrorism," pointing out the "evolving nature of the activities of terrorist groups."
The Minister of State recalled that "the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, has warned on numerous occasions that terrorism now constitutes a threat to the security of the African continent and an obstacle to development efforts, requiring a profound adaptation of the AU's approach to this threat," the same source added.
In his intervention, he also called for "strengthening the partnership with the United Nations," recalling "the sustained efforts made by our country during its mandate on the UN Security Council, notably through its contribution to the implementation of the presidential statement adopted in January 2025 by the Security Council on 'combating terrorism' under Algeria's presidency."
Mr. Attaf concluded by affirming that "Algeria is fully convinced of Africa's capacity to defeat terrorism, and that the path to ridding the continent of this scourge lies in strengthening state institutions, providing security forces with the necessary resources, addressing root causes, and reinforcing international partnerships," the ministry's statement concluded.
